Core Skills Assessments

Level One Assessments

Module 1 Cave/Mine Core skills

Assessments may be undertaken on a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio
Pre requisites: Candidates should have undertaken around 30 underground trips of which there should be an approximate ratio of 1:3 Group trips with some leading: personal trips.

Once accepted on an assessment a home paper will be sent out which must be completed and returned prior too the assessment day. The assessment criteria is available here:

Level Two Assessments

Module 3 Vertical Skills

Assessments may be undertaken on a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio

Pre requisites: Candidates should have undertaken around 30 underground trips including trips involving vertical pitches. It would be expected that there would be an approximate ratio of 1:3 Group trips with some leading: personal trips.

Candidates are assessed on ladder and lifeline rope techniques and their knowledge of equipment and its limitations. Personal equipment, rigging equipment, strategies for rescues.

Once accepted on an assessment a home paper will be sent out which must be completed and returned prior too the assessment day. The assessment criteria is available here:

Additional Level Two Assessment Modules

Module 5 Single Rope Technique progression for the leader (optional)

Assessment ratio 1:2

Pre requisites: Candidates should have undertaken around 30 underground trips including trips involving vertical pitches. It would be expected that there would be an approximate ratio of 1:3 Group trips with some leading: personal trips.

The Local Cave and Mine Leader Award Scheme does not cover the leading and teaching of Single Rope Technique but assesses the personal skills of the leader in using this advanced technique as a personal protection system.

Once accepted on an assessment a home paper will be sent out which must be completed and returned prior too the assessment day. The assessment criteria is available here:

Additional Level One Assessment Modules

Module 6 Mine Core skills (transfer)

Assessments may be undertaken on a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio

Pre requisites: Candidates should have undertaken around 30 underground trips of which there should be an approximate ratio of 1:3 Group trips with some leading: personal trips.

Through a theory paper and practical assessment the areas of group personal clothing and equipment, weather and flooding, action emergency procedures, underground first aid and hypothermia, technical leadership skills for non vertical systems, knowledge of mine hazards, access conservation and mines inspections the law, mine history, techniques and geology are covered.

Once accepted on an assessment a home paper will be sent out which must be completed and returned prior too the assessment day. The assessment criteria is available here:
